Welcome to Conspiracy II the 28th National Science Fiction Convention 2007

Planned Events

Thanks to the fantastic facilites at the Mercure Hotel, Conspiracy II is planning on bringing you as many events as can humanly be stuffed into one convention. There will be three event streams, as well as a continuous gaming stream and a dedicated video/DVD room for the media stream.

Below are some of the events already planned for Conspiracy II:

The B-Grade No-Academy Awards

The best bits from the worst movies finally get their fifty minutes of fame (or infamy)! Awards Hosts Steve and Jess will show clips from the crappiest movies of all time, and then award the best and most crappiest the not-particularly wanted award - The B-Grade No-Academy Award (AKA the "Hemis"). Awards will be in many categories, including: "Best Title", "Worst Hair", "Best One-Liner", and "Best Destruction of a City". Additionally, we will be honouring the four Kings of the B-Grade, and the Emperor who rules above them, with a Lifetime Achievement Award (the names of these five actors will be kept a secret until the event), as well as a Special Lifetime Achievement Award for Troma Entertainment, producers of such fine movies as The Toxic Avenger, Class of Nuke 'Em High, and Sergeant Kabukiman, NYPD.

Be the Starship Engineer

There's an unidentified spaceship off the starboard bow, a strange energy wave up ahead, and you're sucking up all the internet bandwidth trying to download the season finale of Lost. The Captain puts in a call, "Chief Engineer, I need everything you've got, NOW!" and it doesn't sound like he's going to accept any namby-pamby excuses about dilithium crystals. It's time to do what you do best:

"All right Captain, I'll re-route the transfibbulater search capacitator through the hyperlinked cyber-ipod in the AI's secondary brain and send the results through the Warchanahooski matrix internal email system. But it's gonna take me at least another hour!"

The Judges confer. The Captain buys it. You keep your job.

This round.

"Okay, contestant number two, it's your scenario..."

It's Not Just a Game

A talk on the rise of game console RPG (and near-RPGs) fandom. Games such as the Final Fantasy series, Kingdom Hearts, Vagrant Story, Disgaea and even Halo have developed huge fan bases with their fantastic graphics, detailed plots, and character development. There's official merchandise, movie and TV series spin-offs, soundtracks, fan art and fan fiction, fan music videos... the list continues.

How did this all get started? Where do we think it is going? Is this the rise of the first truly "interactive" stories? And isn't it about time we accepted them fully into fandom?

The Ages of the X-Men

No, not their actual ages, but rather a look at the various incarnations and development of the X-Men. This talk will cover the different interpretations seen in comic book, movie, games, and animated TV-shows, and discuss some of the common elements (like how Cyclops manages to be boring in each and every one of them) and do comparisons of their portrayal and changes over time.

Please note that this will NOT include a detailed examination of the different versions of the comic book incarnations (New X-Men, Uncanny X-Men, Ultimate X-Men and so on), as to do so would make Jessica's head explode. Anyone else who wants to tackle this subject at a different talk is more than welcome to do so, however! (See the call below for volunteers.)

TV Theme Show Quiz

Separate from the normal quiz, this one tests your remembrance of TV themes. A few lines or bars or seconds of music will be played - and you have to guess the TV show it introduced. Some will be easy - after all, who could not recognise the Star Trek opening theme? Some... will be otherwise (Tales of the Golden Monkey anyone? :-)

And then there'll be all the Usual Suspects:

The Quiz

A quiz to test your SF and Fantasy l33t skillz.

The Masquerade

The costume competition. However, stealing an idea from other cons, this will be an ACTUAL masquerade (ie. Everyone must wear masks). Those who do not comply will be forced to wear... THE SILLY MASKS!!! Consider yourselves duly warned.

MORE EVENTS TO COME! PLEASE VOLUNTEER!

More events will be listed here as people volunteer and new ideas are thought up. If you're at all interested in running an event, either one you came up with on your own, or you’d like to help run something but don't know what to do, please email the committee and let us know! Help us fill up our events list for maximum enjoyment!

(Or else you'll wind up with all the crazed and sick ideas that our evil geniuses can come up with. Don't make us run the "Forced Hard Labour" event, people.)
